Orthopedic Conditions Case Study

Patient Complaint:
* Difficulty and pain moving left shoulder and neck.
* Left arm swelling
* Limited external range of motion of left shoulder
* Pain rated as 6 out of 10 on a scale of 10
* Unable to reach behind her back
* Difficulty raising left arm overhead

Past Medical History:

* Stage IV melanoma diagnosed in 1985
* Large tumor over left shoulder blade-surgically removed
* Possible muscle tissue removed that stabilized the shoulder blade
* Extensive skin grafting around left shoulder blade
* Dissection of axillary lymph nodes

Clinical Impression:
* Postural changes in scapula and neck
* Mild to moderate lymphedema of the left arm exacerbated
   by shoulder condition

Treatment:
* Manual physical therapy techniques to stretch left shoulder
    and loosen scar tissue
* Exercise program to strengthen rotator cuff and shoulder blade
   stabilizing muscles
* Temporary use of gradient compression sleeve worn on left arm

Results:
* Pain diminished to 0 on a scale of 10
* Posture and range of motion increased to normal
* Swelling completely resolved
* No complaints of discomfort while performing activities of daily living
